Feet up on my mother's yellow couch. Laptop on my lap. It's my last working day before I take two weeks off.

I love the end of the year. And I don't just mean sipping endless red mulled wine out of a kitsch mug with angels on it. Or eating Weihnachtskekse (Christmas cookies) like there's no tomorrow. Although that's great too ..

… It's the days before the new year knocks on our door. It's a time full of possibilities. I know, I know. It's an entirely random date, and there is no reason why the transition from December to January should feel any different. But for me, it always has been.

And maybe that's because of this tradition: It's when I reflect on the past year and make intentions for the next. It's been a practice I've been doing for at least 7 years, and I cherish it.

If you want to try it,
, here are my reflection prompts. I will share my reflection in the next newsletter in January.

  1. Your past year in three words.
  2. The highlights (events/things/places/people) of 2023
  3. What are you grateful for?
  4. What have you found out about yourself?
  5. What are you most proud of? Why?
  6. What were your biggest achievements this year? How did you achieve those? What did you learn in the process?
  7. What new things (skills, etc) have you learned in 2023?
  8. What were your challenges this year? How did you overcome them? What did you learn about yourself in the process?
  9. What mistakes did you make over the past year? What did you learn?
  10. Was it a good year? Why? Why not?
  11. What do you want to let go of before 2024? (people, belief, project et al.)
  12. What will make 2024 a great year for you? What will you focus on?
  13. Pick one word that will define and symbolise 2024 for you.
  14. Add your own!

Answering these 13 questions takes a couple of hours. But if you want a more extensive reflection package, check out yearcompass.com.
